Are you 'healthy'?

What is 'healthy'? What does it look like? What does it feel like?

Ayurvedic sages have emphasised a holistic approach to health and wellbeing that focuses on balancing the mind, body, and spirit to achieve optimal health. These signs of good health in Ayurveda are derived from the fundamental principles of the system, which emphasise the balance of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), the proper functioning of Agni (digestive fire), and the efficient elimination of toxins (Ama). They also incorporate the importance of mental and emotional balance, considering the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit.

By observing these signs, Ayurveda provides a comprehensive framework for assessing and maintaining optimal health, emphasising preventive care and lifestyle practices that support overall well-being.

Here are 12 signs that you are balanced and in good health that you can use to check your current status of health daily or weekly.

You are healthy if you..

 Have a daily bowel motion

Having regular, easy-to-pass bowel movements without discomfort indicates a balanced digestive system and a well-functioning Agni (digestive fire).

 Have a healthy appetite

A balanced appetite that signals hunger at regular intervals and satisfaction after meals indicates good digestive health.

 You have clear urine

Urine that is clear and light yellow suggests proper hydration and healthy kidney function. It should be free from strong odor or discomfort during urination.

 Sleep well at night

Consistent, restful sleep without disturbances is a sign of good health. You should wake up feeling refreshed and energised.

 Stable energy reserve

Having consistent energy throughout the day without extreme highs and lows indicates balanced doshas and proper functioning of bodily systems.

 Healthy skin

Clear, radiant, and well-hydrated skin reflects good overall health, proper nutrition, and efficient elimination of toxins.

 Optimal body weight

Maintaining a stable weight appropriate for your body type and constitution (Prakriti) signifies balanced metabolism and healthy lifestyle habits.

A strong immunity

A robust immune system that wards off illnesses and infections is a key indicator of good health. This includes quick recovery from minor ailments.

 A positive mental state

A calm, focused, and positive state of mind indicates balanced mental health and emotional well-being. This includes the ability to manage stress effectively.

 Balanced senses

Sharp and clear sensory perception, such as good vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, signifies healthy functioning of the sensory organs.

Healthy hair and nails

Strong, shiny hair and clear, firm nails indicate good nutritional status and overall health.

 Good circulation

Warm hands and feet, and a healthy complexion, indicate good blood circulation and overall cardiovascular health.
