WHAT IS PANCHAKARMA?

The potent detox regimen and timeless tradition.

Panchakarma, which translates to "five actions" in sanskrit, is an integral part of Ayurveda, the traditional indian system of medicine. Rooted in ancient wisdom, ayurveda believes that optimal health results from a harmonious balance between the three doshas vata, pitta, and kapha. When these energies are out of balance due to poor lifestyle choices, stress, or environmental factors, it can lead to various health issues.

Panchakarma is not just a series of treatments; it's an intricate process tailored to each individual's unique constitution and health needs. Before undergoing panchakarma, Dr.Ajit will conduct a thorough assessment, including pulse diagnosis, tongue analysis, and iridology, to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

The cleansing process usually spans 7-10 days and involves a sequence of preparatory therapies to loosen toxins and pave the way for their expulsion. These therapies can include massage treatments using specially chosen medicinal oils (can also include synchronised 2-person massage ), herbal steam baths (swedana), and other forms of therapeutic treatments.

“Panchakarma has been an amazing experience and the positive effects are only just starting to flow throughout my life. Ayurveda and Dr.Ajit has already transformed my life in more ways than I can imagine. The 3 stages of Panchakarma

Pooravkarma (Pre-Operative) -

In this procedure the body is prepared so toxins can be safely dislodged from the tissues. These toxins collect at various sites in the digestive system.

Pradhankarma (Main Action) –

The toxins that have been dislodged from the tissues are eliminated from the body.

Paschatkarma (Post-Operative) –

This is the most important component of the treatment, nourishing the depleted tissues and preventing the build up of further toxins by changes to lifestyle & diet.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Before undergoing panchakarma, a qualified ayurvedic practitioner conducts a detailed assessment, which includes pulse diagnosis and understanding the individual's unique constitution (prakriti) and current imbalances (vikriti). Based on this evaluation, a personalised panchakarma treatment plan is developed.

To prepare the body for the deep cleansing process, pre-panchakarma therapies are administered. These therapies include specific oil massages (abhyanga) to loosen toxins, herbal steam baths (swedana) to induce sweating and open the channels, and possibly dietary adjustments to enhance the efficacy of the treatment.

The first step in panchakarma is vamana, which involves therapeutic vomiting. Prior to this procedure, the individual is prepared with oil massages and internal oleation. Then, carefully selected herbal formulations are administered to induce vomiting, helping to eliminate excess kapha-related toxins from the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.

After vamana, virechana is performed, which involves the use of herbal laxatives to promote controlled bowel movements. This process helps eliminate excess pitta from the body, detoxifies the liver, and purges toxins from the lower gastrointestinal tract.

Basti, the third step, focuses on balancing vata dosha. It involves administering herbal oils, decoctions, or medicated ghee into the rectum. Basti nourishes and cleanses the colon, promoting proper bowel movements and eliminating vata-related imbalances.

Nasya involves administering medicated oils or herbal preparations through the nasal passages. This process helps clear the head and neck region, alleviating congestion and imbalances related to the respiratory system, sensory organs, and nervous system.

After completing the main panchakarma procedures, post-treatment care is essential. This involves a gradual reintroduction of specific foods, lifestyle adjustments, and continued herbal support to maintain the balance achieved during the panchakarma process.

Panchakarma works on multiple levels it cleanses the physical body by removing accumulated toxins, balances the doshas, and supports overall health and well-being. Additionally, it nurtures the mind and spirit, promoting mental clarity, emotional stability, and a sense of inner harmony. The therapy's comprehensive approach ensures that the body's self-healing mechanisms are optimized, leading to a renewed state of vitality and rejuvenation. However, it's important to remember that panchakarma should be performed under the guidance of a qualified ayurvedic practitioner to ensure its safety and effectiveness for individual needs.
