Re-hydrating your Skin this Winter

Re-hydrating your skin – the Ayurveda Way

It’s that time of year when the cool, windy air blows and it’s hard to keep our skin beautiful and soft. When it’s cold outside, our skin is dry and no matter what we do it’s hard to keep it hydrated.

Ayurveda says that water is essential to maintaining skin health but drinking 10 cups of water a day is not always possible. Did you know that there is actually a special way to drink water depending on your dosha? If you prepare your water for your dosha, then you can drink much less to have lasting effects.

One thing that is important is that you should never drink ice cold water – or any beverage at all because this hinders the digestion of food which shows up on your skin. Instead, boil your normal drinking water for 5 minutes. Vata doshas should drink the water warm while Kaphas can sip it hot. Pitta doshas need to wait until it cools down to room temperature before drinking it. If you aren’t sure what your dosha is, take the test here. Drinking your daily water intake this way helps to flush toxins from your body and it moisturises your skin from the inside out.

If you don’t like to drink plain water, you can add herbs and spices for a delicious winter drink!

Try adding:

½ teaspoon cumin seeds
½ teaspoon coriander seeds
2 pinches of ground licorice root

As well as drinking water prepared specifically for your dosha, you can also apply a natural moisturiser to keep your skin soft and supple.
