In Ayurveda, water stored in a copper vessel is known as Tamra Jal. From a clinical perspective, copper is oligodynamic, meaning it has a natural, self-sterilising effect that helps neutralise harmful bacteria and pathogens over time. Beyond purification, copper is a vital trace mineral traditionally associated with supporting the nervous system, skin, and joints. When water rests in this vessel for 4–8 hours, Ayurveda considers it to become naturally alkaline and “charged.” This is traditionally used to balance the three Doshas, specifically to cool excess Pitta and support Agni (digestive fire) to help clear metabolic waste from the system.
