Detail

You don’t wake up one morning with a “Vata problem” – it creeps in quietly. The shoulders that never quite relax. The lower back that complains after a short drive. The click in your knee. The nights when your body is exhausted but your mind won’t shut down. In Ayurveda, this pattern is known as Vata gone out of balance – the slow loss of warmth, lubrication, and inner steadiness. Vata Massage Oil is a traditional Ayurvedic medicated oil created for this state.

A warming sesame oil base is gently infused with herbs such as Ashwagandha, Brihati, Liquorice, and Saffron using classical preparation methods, allowing the qualities of the herbs to bind with the oil and reach the tissues through massage.

This is a medicated therapeutic oil, not an average cosmetic spa oil. It feels richer on the skin at first, then gradually absorbs, leaving the body feeling warmer, more supported, and less brittle.

Used regularly as part of an Abhyanga (self-massage) routine, it helps restore a sense of comfort in muscles and joints, nourish dry Vata-type skin, and take the constant edge off the nervous system over time.

What This Product Does

Helps a “wired but tired” body feel warmer, softer and more held.

Talks directly to your nervous system

When you warm the oil and apply it with slow, steady strokes, the combination of warmth, weight, and rhythm sends a clear message to your body that it doesn’t have to stay on high alert. Over time, that “always bracing” feeling can shift into a calmer, more grounded state.

Eases stiffness in dry, overworked muscles and joints

Vata imbalance often shows up as tight shoulders, creaky knees, a sore lower back, and joints that feel more fragile than they should. The warming sesame base and Vata-pacifying herbs bring lubrication and softness back to these areas, supporting easier, more confident movement.

Cocoons dry, Vata-type skin

Vata skin tends to feel thin, rough, and thirsty, even after moisturiser. This oil gives a deeper, oil-based layer of nourishment, so skin feels cocooned and less exposed to cold, wind, and daily stress.

Supports everyday resilience, not just a one-off treat

One use feels comforting; regular use (a few times a week) helps create a new baseline. Your body feels less brittle and depleted, your nervous system less jumpy, so your natural Vata gifts – creativity, intuition, quick thinking – can shine without leaving you exhausted.

Who It’s For

This oil is a good fit if you:

• Often feel “wired but tired” – mentally busy, physically drained.

• Notice stiffness, “creakiness” or tension in your muscles and joints, especially in cool, windy or changeable weather.

 • Have dry or rough skin that never quite feels moisturised enough with regular body lotions.

 • Often have cold hands and feet and feel the cold more than others.

• Lie awake with thoughts racing, or wake feeling like your body hasn’t properly rested.

• You know you need grounding, but meditation apps aren’t touching what’s happening in your body.

• Are drawn to a simple, grounding self-massage ritual that fits into a busy life, rather than a complicated spa routine.

Ayurvedic Insight

Ayurveda has a clear way of describing the “wired but worn out” pattern: it calls it a Vata imbalance. Vata dosha is the air-and-space energy that drives movement, the nervous system, and rapid thought. In balance, it gives creativity, intuition, adaptability, and a light, flexible body.

When pushed too hard, it can slip into scattered thoughts, dry skin, tight or clicky joints, light, broken sleep, and a sense that the body feels more fragile than it should. Ayurveda says these early changes often show first in Asthi Dhatu – the bone and structural tissue that quietly holds you up from within.

Vata Massage Oil is designed with that pattern in mind. The warm, heavier nature of medicated sesame oil, combined with grounding herbs like Ashwagandha and Brihati, brings in the opposite of Vata’s cold, light, restless qualities.

Where Vata tends to dry and destabilise, this formula offers lubrication, warmth, and a gentle feeling of containment – the qualities Vata bodies and minds are most in need of.

When you warm the oil in your hands and work it slowly into the body as Abhyanga, it becomes more than a moisturising step. Each stroke helps send a message through the nervous system: slow down, you’re supported. Over time, this kind of regular self-massage is understood in Ayurveda as maintenance care for Vata and Asthi Dhatu – helping joints feel more cushioned, skin more nourished and your whole system less on edge, so you can stay imaginative and quick without running on empty.

How to Use

Always warm the oil before use and apply it as a pre-shower Abhyanga ritual, turning your shower or bath into a mind-and-body reset.

To warm the oil (do not microwave)

• Place the closed bottle in a mug or bowl of hot water for a few minutes, or
• Pour the amount you need into a small oil burner/warmer or heat-safe bowl and gently warm it until it feels comfortably warm to the touch.

To apply

Massage the warm oil into the body with slow, firm strokes – long strokes along the arms and legs, circular movements over the joints and abdomen.

Focus on the tight and cold areas

• Spend extra time on places that feel cold, stiff, or overworked – lower back, hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, neck, and feet. Move slowly enough that your body can register the touch and warmth.
• Aim to leave the oil on for at least 10 minutes; longer (20–30 minutes) is ideal when you have time, turning your shower into a full-body reset rather than a quick rinse.

To remove

Follow with a mild warm shower, using a mild, non-stripping soap or body wash to gently cleanse away excess oil while leaving the skin feeling nourished, not squeaky-clean or dry.

How often?

Use 2–5 times per week, depending on how “Vata” you’re feeling and what your routine allows. In colder, windier, or more stressful periods, daily use can be particularly supportive.

Note

For external use only. This is a medicated herbal oil, not an essential oil or fragrance oil. Avoid contact with eyes and broken or irritated skin; discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Key Functional Ingredients

Black Sesame Oil - Sesamum indicum nigrum

Sesame Oil molecules absorb quickly through the skin, into the tissue to stop inflammatory processes, make skin look and feel youthful, soft and resilient making it the very best natural conditioner for the skin. Sesame Oil penetrates to the very marrow of the bone, on the way it gathers oil soluble toxins and takes them into the bloodstream to be eliminated by the body as waste. It also neutralises oxygen radicals, which are thought to be one of the major causes of ageing.

Ashwagandha - Withania somnifera

Ashwagandha contains high levels of antioxidants that fight free radicals, helping to combat the signs of ageing such as wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and blemishes. It also contains steroidal compounds that can increase oestrogen levels in the body. DHEA and oestrogen work together to keep the skin youthful by stimulating collagen production and increasing natural skin oils.

Dashamoola (Ten-root compound)

A traditional blend of ten roots valued in Ayurveda for supporting joint comfort, anti-inflammation properties, circulation, and Vata-related aches and stiffness, especially in cooler or windy weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Ayurveda is the ancient healthcare system of India. It is a Sanskrit word - Ayur means 'life' or 'daily living' and Veda means 'science'. Ayurveda then is the name given to the scientific study of life, based on the eternal principle that everyone should live in a healthy & balanced state.

The central principle of Ayurveda is that each human being has the right to live a healthy & fulfilled life (dharma), however, because of our unique body constitution, genetic inheritance and unhealthy diet & lifestyle choices, we are predisposed to certain diseases and health concerns.

Modern medicine treats symptomatically rather than looking to the root cause of the problem. This stems from the view that all people are more or less the same. Ayurveda’s special contribution is healing the cause of the symptoms by considering the uniqueness of each patient and by helping each body to heal itself.

Ayurveda has perfected healing treatments and herbal preparations to keep the physical, mental and emotional health of a person in its prime throughout life. It is contrary to the current practice of waiting until symptoms appear before getting medical help or only seeking treatment when a disease manifests.

No. In fact, there are some Ayurvedic preparations that use animal products to treat specific ailments. However, Ayurveda recognises that meat is very heavy and the stomach struggles to digest it properly. Without the addition of particular kitchen herbs to aid digestion, this undigested food can become toxic, leading to many health problems.

Also, because meat is heavy it is considered Tamasic, the qualities of which can dull the mind, making it sluggish & heavy. Ayurveda believes that a heavy & dull mind is unable to make good choices for us, which again can be the cause of many ailments.

No. While it is true that many Ayurvedic recipes use Indian ingredients, you are not required to only eat Indian food. Ayurveda gives you the understanding of the role digestion and nutrition play in creating a healthy life and how food can be used as a medicine to treat illness. This awareness can be applied to all foods. However, it is true that Ayurveda considers many of the heavily processed foods in our Western diet to be detrimental to our digestion and good health.

• Traditional Ayurvedic products target the root cause of all illness rather than treating the symptoms of disease.

• Authentic Ayurvedic products will only be a combination of pure herbs & minerals and will never contain synthetic vitamins and other substances.

• Traditional Ayurvedic products while helping to dislodge toxins from deep tissue will also assist in the rejuvenation of that tissue.

• Ayurvedic products will help to revive the intelligence to that particular system/organ or tissue that has been affected by the build up of toxins. Once all the toxins have been eliminated one doesn’t need to keep taking these products.

Ayurveda has a simple treatment plan:

• Stop the further accumulation of toxins in the body by improving digestion. Food is then “cooked” properly, preventing the build up of toxins.
• Remove accumulated toxins from the body through herbal preparations and specific Ayurvedic treatments like massage.
• Nourish the depleted tissues through diet, herbal preparations & lifestyle changes.

• Ayurveda is based on the subjective understanding of the body.

• Ayurveda aims to improve the wellbeing of everybody and does not belong to a particular country or religion.

• Treatment is based on the individual as a whole.

• It is a much more systematic & holistic approach to achieve perfect balance between mind, body & soul.

• Whatever is present in the universe, Ayurveda recognises as also being present in the human body.

• The Universe according to Ayurveda is composed of the five great elements - Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth (Known as Panchmahabhuta).

• These elements are responsible for all the living and nonliving substances in this universe.

• The human body is also composed of the five great elements

• Man is said to be the microcosm of this macrocosm

• These elements are recognised in the form of three Doshas or biological humours - Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

• The three Doshas are the intelligences behind each and every function that occurs in the body:

Air & Ether = Vata

Fire & Water = Pitta

Earth & Water = Kapha

• The Doshas govern the psycho-biological and physio-pathological changes in the body.

• Vata, Pitta and Kapha can be found in every body cell, tissue and organ.

• The level of each Dosha varies from person to person which ultimately determines an individual’s body type (Prakriti).

• It is the most eco-friendly system of medicine as it only uses materials that are natural and compatible to the body.

• Each individual has a unique bodily intelligence that has the power to keep the body in perfect health as long as this intelligence stays in balance.

• Ayurveda gives us a detailed & logical explanation of way the body, mind & soul interact.

Some people feel clearer and more confident immediately because they finally understand what’s going on. Results vary based on the chronicity and depth of the imbalance. You can often feel a shift in energy, digestion, and sleep within the first 2–4 weeks of consistently applying the recommendations. Deeper, long-term conditions may require a commitment of several months.

No. Ayurveda is a root-cause approach. Results depend on consistency, and the most meaningful changes come from steady daily practice.
