Ashwagandha is Not Energy in a Capsule

Jul 10, 2026

Insights on the fashionable trend towards Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Written by Dr. Ajit

The Biggest Mistake People Make

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make with Ashwagandha is expecting it to behave like caffeine. They take it because they are tired. They hope it will make them feel energised. When that doesn't happen immediately, they decide the herb doesn't work. In most cases, the problem isn't Ashwagandha. The problem is the expectation.

Why People Take It

Over the years at Ayurda, we've seen people turn to Ashwagandha for many reasons:

• They're carrying ongoing stress and feeling its weight

• They're tired in a way that rest alone doesn't fix

• They're experiencing burnout - that sense of running on fumes

• They've noticed their energy has become unpredictable or low

These are legitimate reasons to explore support. The problem isn't the need. The problem is the expectation about what Ashwagandha will do and how quickly it will do it.

Why Some People Think It Doesn't Work

There are several reasons why people may feel disappointed with Ashwagandha. Understanding these helps you avoid the same disappointment.

WRONG EXPECTATIONS

One of the most common expectations is a noticeable burst of energy - like the effect of a strong coffee. Ashwagandha is not used that way. Its effects are gradual and cumulative. Most people begin noticing changes within 2–4 weeks of consistent use, and these changes are subtle: sleep becomes more refreshing, stress feels easier to manage, recovery improves.

POOR DIGESTION

Ayurveda places enormous importance on digestion. Even the highest quality herbs are unlikely to work optimally if digestion is compromised. This is one reason traditional formulations often combine supportive herbs rather than relying on a single ingredient.

LIFESTYLE FACTORS CONTINUE TO CREATE DEPLETION

Poor sleep, chronic stress, irregular eating habits and excessive stimulation all place ongoing demands on your reserves. No herb can completely compensate for lifestyle habits that continually drain recovery.

LOOKING FOR STIMULATION, NOT RESTORATION

Modern life has conditioned us to think about fatigue in a particular way: if we feel tired, we need more energy. The solution seems obvious - another coffee, another supplement, another attempt to push through. Ashwagandha doesn't work this way. It supports restoration, not stimulation.

What Ashwagandha Actually Does

Ashwagandha, known botanically as Withania somnifera, is classified in Ayurveda as a Rasayana.

A Rasayana is traditionally used to nourish the body, support healthy ageing and help maintain vitality over time.

Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam describe Rasayana therapies as supporting strength, endurance and overall wellbeing. Rather than being prescribed for a temporary boost, Ashwagandha was traditionally used during periods of physical weakness, recovery, stress or difficulty.

Its role is to support the body's capacity to restore itself. Not to force performance beyond your limits. Not to provide artificial energy. But to rebuild the foundations that allow sustainable vitality.

HOW IT WORKS

Think of Ashwagandha as supporting the recharge process rather than increasing output. If a battery is constantly being drained, simply demanding more power doesn't solve the problem. The battery needs an opportunity to recharge.

Ashwagandha works by supporting the systems involved in recovery and adaptation. When these systems function more effectively, people often experience better resilience, steadier energy and improved ability to cope with physical and emotional demands.

WHAT RESEARCH SHOWS

Modern research has focused on Ashwagandha's potential role in stress management, sleep quality, cognitive function and physical performance. Several studies have reported positive outcomes relating to perceived stress levels, sleep quality and overall wellbeing.

The findings are interesting because they align with many of Ashwagandha's traditional Ayurvedic uses. At the same time, Ashwagandha should not be viewed as a cure-all. Individual responses vary, and research continues to develop.

Why Ayurveda Rarely Uses One Herb Alone

Here's something important to understand about traditional Ayurvedic practice: it places great importance on synergy.

Different herbs support different systems. A person's digestion influences nutrient absorption. Their nervous system influences sleep. Their circulation influences tissue nourishment. Recovery depends on all of these working together.

Traditional Ayurvedic formulations are designed to work together rather than relying on a single ingredient. This isn't about complexity for the sake of it. It's about supporting the whole system, not just one symptom.

Why Rejuva-Ton Was Developed

This philosophy of synergy influenced the development of Ayurda Rejuva-Ton. Rather than relying solely on Ashwagandha, it brings together four herbs, each contributing a different function:

ASHWAGANDHA

Supports nervous system resilience and the body's ability to adapt to stress.

BACOPA MONNIERI

Nourishes and calms the nervous system, improving sleep quality and mental clarity.

LONG PEPPER

Strengthens digestive fire, ensuring the body can fully absorb and utilise the nourishment it receives.

ARJUNA

Supports cardiovascular function, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues efficiently.

Together, these herbs create a broader and more balanced approach to resilience, recovery and vitality. The intention is not simply to increase energy. The intention is to support the foundations that allow vitality to return naturally.

Three Things To Remember

1. Ashwagandha is not a stimulant. Its traditional role is to support recovery, resilience and adaptation rather than provide an immediate energy boost.

2. Results are often gradual. Many people notice improvements in recovery, stress tolerance and sleep quality before they notice changes in energy. Most effects appear within 2–4 weeks of consistent use.

3. Ashwagandha works best as part of a bigger picture. Digestion, sleep, nutrition and lifestyle habits all influence how effective any herb is likely to be.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that Ashwagandha was never intended to help people push harder. Its traditional role is to help the body recover more effectively from the demands already being placed upon it.

If you approach Ashwagandha expecting the effects of caffeine, you may be disappointed. If you approach it as a herb traditionally used to support recovery, resilience and long-term vitality, its role becomes much easier to appreciate.
